Extension of Remote Learning - Parent Memo January 10th

Dear Corpus Christi Families,

Well, it wasn’t the announcement we were hoping for! We were all praying that we would be back together this week - in person. That being said, we appreciate and understand the fact that everyone’s health MUST be a priority.

I would like to take a moment to give a huge shout out to all of the parents out there (including many of our staff who have children at home as well)! You are doing such an AMAZING job supporting your children. We were so pleased to be able to distribute devices to so many of our students who needed them to fully participate in online learning. It is simply incredible to me, to watch and listen to our children, and see how they are navigating this situation. You must all be so very proud of your children.

In addition, from my end, I see the countless hours and dedication being put forth by all of our staff . The collaboration and sharing has been constant this year and has ramped up in a big way this past week. We have all needed each other’s support at times. We have been encouraging each other to laugh, even when we feel like crying. WE all need to celebrate the wonderful things that have happened this past week!

As was the practice this past week, I will continue to hold morning announcements, prayer, and O Canada (and of course birthdays) each day at 9:20 am.

We would like to request that you help your child to find a location in your home where they can participate in learning - free from household distractions when at all possible. In an effort to replicate the classroom setting as much as possible, we suggest that older students, especially those in the junior grades, work independently. The classroom teachers will do their best to help them from this end, and if they are really stuck with something, then the teacher might suggest they seek out help from a parent or sibling. We understand that this might be more challenging for the younger students. If it is necessary for you to be nearby, please keep in mind that any noise or conversations happening in the background at your house can be heard by the class. We thank you, in advance, for helping us to set up the best learning environment for all students.

Thank you for your efforts to support your child during these upcoming weeks. We appreciate how challenging it is for everyone. I know and see how very hard staff are working to create engaging and effective lessons. Our learning curve has been steep and we spend evenings watching webinars, etc. to help teach ourselves some new programs and best practices. Know that we are here and will do our very best to ensure things run smoothly. The students are allstars and continue to amaze all of us with their determination and participation during online learning.

Registration week for Junior Kindergarten (must be 4 years old by December 31, 2021) and any NEW Senior Kindergarten students (must be 5 years old by December 31, 2021) will begin on Monday, January 11th.  OCSB KINDERGARTEN WEBSITE

Why register in January? We are encouraging parents to register now. It helps our schools prepare for their child's arrival, and it helps promote Kindergarten readiness. Families who register will receive an excellent new OCSB welcome package in the mail (while supplies last), which helps their child get excited about starting school. The surprise package is filled with tips and activities to help prepare them for Kindergarten. REGISTER NOW

Virtual 3D tours of our kindergarten classrooms - from the comfort of your couch. Every year, we run a city-wide advertising campaign to promote Kindergarten registration. With COVID restrictions making it impossible for parents to come into schools, we decided to bring the schools to parents! Every OCSB elementary website now has a 3D virtual tour of one of their Kindergarten classrooms! (TAKE A 3D TOUR) Please call the school (613-232-9743) if you have any questions.

AttendanceParents of elementary school students should ensure they continue to notify the school if their child is absent.  A quick email to the school account is best. (corpus.christi@ocsb.ca)

Student Support Videos

The OCSB LT department has also developed student videos. The goal of these videos is to help students (new to remote learning) better understand what remote learning is all about.

Device Distribution:  We anticipate that most students have access to a device that they can use during remote learning; however, if you require a device, please contact the school office via the Corpus Christi email address. (corpus.christi@ocsb.ca)
